Across our nation, more than 900,000 sworn law enforcement officers stand watch over our communities. When you take your oath, you accept a sacred responsibility and real risk. In the quiet moments and in times of great danger, you willingly place yourselves in harm’s way to protect others. Even on the calmest day, the next call may demand extraordinary courage. Today, we say with full hearts: America is grateful, and we thank God for you.
We place our trust in law enforcement because we know the character of those who serve and the preparation that forms them. You are men and women who stand between good and evil, who step into chaos to bring order, and who enter moments of fear with the purpose of preserving life. Scripture reminds us that “greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Your service reflects that truth each day. You choose this calling because you respect the law and understand that God has entrusted civil authority to those who serve with justice and restraint. As Romans teaches, those who serve in authority are called to be servants for the good of others. Throughout our nation’s history, God has faithfully raised up men and women willing to answer this calling, and we give thanks for your obedience, courage, and integrity.
Every day, in every community, we benefit from your vigilance and sacrifice. Today, we especially honor those whose watch ended in the line of duty. We remember the fallen with reverence and prayer, and we lift up their families, asking God to surround them with comfort, strength, and peace. Though we can never fully repay the debt we owe, we acknowledge it with humility and gratitude. The unity and loyalty of law enforcement are seen most clearly in times of loss. When an officer is taken from us, an entire brotherhood and sisterhood stands together, and communities pause to mourn and to honor a life given in service. In those moments, we witness the deep bonds formed through shared sacrifice and shared faith.
To our law enforcement officers: may God bless you and keep you, grant you wisdom, protect you in every call, and bring you safely home. Thank you for your service, your courage, and your faithfulness. We stand with you, we pray for you, and we give thanks to God for you.
